About June Long-Schuman

June Long-Schuman Biography – June Long-Schuman June Long-Schuman was born in New York and currently lives in Melbourne, Florida. At a young age, after spending several summers traveling to Europe with her uncle, she became interested in art, particularly sculpture. She received a BFA in Fine Art from Pratt Institute, and went on to earn her permanent teaching certification in art sharing her love of art with both children and adults. After studying printmaking at CW Post and Stony Brook University, the human figure became the subject of a series of monoprints depicting dynamic spiritual energy. Her work received several awards including First Place in Graphics at the Gallery North Outdoor show on Long Island, and many honorable mentions thereafter, including the National Works on Paper Competition for the Fire House Gallery. After the tragedy of 9-11, June was compelled to complete a mural that would help to comfort those who lost loved ones by sending a message of Faith, Love and Hope. “Soaring Spirits at Ground Zero” is a tribute to the heroes and victims of 9-11. The 5’ by 6’ mural was donated to the Islip Fire Fighters Museum in Islip, NY and has become part of their permanent collection. Shortly after completing Soaring Spirits, June was commissioned to paint a mural on the altar ceiling of a local church. “Calling of the Angels” is an 8’ by 12’ mural she completed “Michelangelo-style” on her back on a scaffold. June’s Plein air landscape paintings all have a painterly gestural approach imbued with a sense of calm tranquility. Rather than concentrating on pure realism and detail, her impetus is capturing the overall feeling and sense of time and place. June writes, “painting is a way of connecting with the moment and the place in time. Art is a visual language, it tells a story, evokes emotion and preserves history.” Her plein air paintings have been included in several juried shows on Long Island including the Heckscher Art Museum, The Chelsea Art Center, and the Art League of Long Island where she also taught adult classes. In contrast to her landscapes, June’s wildlife series of manatees, sea turtles and birds evoke a sense of power and grace expressing more realism “In nature we find our true power and our energy blends with the eternal universe,” says the artist. She has three paintings currently on display at the Melbourne Airport and has several upcoming local group shows. Inspired by Florida’s lush tropical landscape and amazing wildlife, June continues to participate in group and juried shows and Plein Air events. She’s excited to have been asked to participate in fund raising events and art shows for the Brevard County Zoo and their plans for a new aquarium.
